Instagram Accounts Every Makeup Lover Should Follow

Posted on September 16, 2020 at 9:10 AM

I will be honest, Instagram is still a bit of a mystery to me. Why does it draw me in every time I reach for my phone? Well, it definitely can be addictive, but it can be a great resource at times, and if you are going to go on it anyways, here are a few accounts that I find inspiring; not only for the beautiful photos, but the great tips, hacks and recommendations from everyday, working makeup artists. Here are some Instagram accounts I follow for makeup inspiration- whether it is bridal, editorial or just to see what other makeup artists are up to and how they work:

For Bridal: My newest favourite and a real working makeup artist, the first account is from Mia Connor, and it is her bridal specific account: Mia Connor Bridal Artist (@miaconnorbridal) •

Now, a lot of these lovely ladies are bombshells, but Mia’s touch is soft and glowy-very Victoria’s Secret, but achievable for the modern bride. I would say her signature is a blown out smokey eye, keeping the rest of the face defined and pretty. She goes very full coverage with her base, so don’t be fooled, there is quite a bit of makeup there. But, for photography and longevity, you will want a little more coverage than what you would wear day to day. I think it is important to see makeup looks that are for actual events, on real faces, with minimal editing. Many of the "inspiraiton" pictures you find on instgram do not meet all of these criteria.

For Hollywood Glam: Soft glam at it’s finest; with celebrity looks: Sofia Schwarzkop-Tilbury (@sofiaschwarzkopftilbury) •

Sofia, the niece of makeup artist mogul Charlotte Tilbury (one of my favourite brands, that features heavily in my pro makeup kit); known as on Instagram is another favourite. She herself is a knockout, but her style is quite glamorous, but still wearable, much like the Tilbury brand itself. Her looks, along with Charlotte’s are best described as uncomplicated glamour- you really see the features of the face, but they are heightened and enhanced, perfect for brides. The looks are also very glowy and meant to inspire confidence for every woman at every age. Charlotte also posts photos of makeup she does on celebs, including mature women- which we do not see enough of on Instagram, or in the media as a whole.

For Wearable Editorial/Red Carpet Looks: Harriet Hadfield (@harrymakesitup) •

I have been following Harry since the “pixiwoo” days, and she is really my kind of makeup artist. If you love red carpet makeup, or wearable editorial looks, Harry recrestes both on Instagram and YouTube. Her looks are very clean, wearable for everyday even, and she truly enjoys makeup, and has a lovely personality to boot. She is a working makeup artist in L.A., and does editorial and red carpet makeup for a living, so she knows what she is talking about! Since she works on women with all different skin tones, she is great at pointing out shades and colours that can work for everyone. I think whether you are a beginner with makeup or not- or just love watching makeup tutorials, you will enjoy her content.

For Editorial and Easy To Follow Tutorials: Hannah Martin (@hannahmartinmakeup) •

Ms.Martin is another working makeup artist, and works in bridal, film/television and editorial. I was drawn to her because she has that Bobbi Brown Aesthetic- naturally beautiful and polished makeup, that is not trying to drastically change how you look; just elevate it. The highlight of her page for me is her IGTV tutorials. I think most wil find them easy to follow, and the result is always a truly wearable natural glam. She does have a light to medium skin tone, and a lighter blonde colouring; but her tips are universal; and she often gives tips for deeper skin tones. She is great at explaining her techniques, and boy is she fast! If you are looking for quick, lovely bronzey or smokey looks, check her out!

Last but not least, I will plug my own Instagram account, Toronto Makeup Artist (@facetimewithdaniela) • as a resource for natural makeup inspiration, specifically bridal and event makeup, as well as makeup tips. I try to bring out the natural beauty in every client I work with, and I hope you can see that with every photo I post. Take a look and let me know what you think!

xx Daniela
